*** A short blog by our son on a little walk near Gruinard bay towards An Teallach Β  It was really hard first. There were lots of vines, even more bog! There was some stunning views of waterfalls. We didn’t manage to get to the end. There was a lot of rock climbing. It felt […]

Getting dirty with history on an NTS archaeology dig

Posted on November 10, 2018 by an outdoors family

At the weekend we headed to Dunkeld to do something a bit different for us; we went on an archaeology dig on the battle site dated 1689 when the first Jacobite rebellion lost to the red coat soldiers. The event was organised by the National Trust for Scotland who had already set out the grid […]

The alarm was set early for yesterdays trip to the The alarm was set early for yesterdays trip to the mountains. We needn't have bothered because I couldn't sleep anyway, I was like a kid at Xmas!

We were out of the house by 7am, boots on and starting up the hill by 8:30. We let our youngest get a feel for the walk, as the path meandered along side a river on one side, he shouted "Good morning!" to all the sheep on the other.

Within 30 minutes we could see slight access issues with a new deer fence blocking the originally planned route up. Moving on to Plan B, we took the long way. Within another 30 minutes, our youngest was in the carrier as the route got steeper and steeper. At the top, we stopped for cheesy summit pictures before heading back down, traversing our way back to the saddle. Before long he was fast asleep.

Our eldest was in his element, thriving at being back in the mountains, so instead of heading straight to the car, we carried on a bit more, coming back down along a ridge before stopping for a late lunch. This was why we were up and out early. We sat for a while, the boys explored and played. We were in no rush. This is what we'd all been craving for so long. Open space, big blue skies, somewhere new to explore. No checking our watches or phones. Nowhere to be but here. Just being in the moment. The boys loved having that time to discover, explore and have their own bit of adventure.

Always make time to see the world through their eyes. That's where the magic happens πŸ’«

I'm not going to lie, I'm feeling a bit emotional I'm not going to lie, I'm feeling a bit emotional right now πŸ™ˆ. Travel restrictions are being lifted early THIS Friday! I'm excited, our 9yo has already named it Freedom Friday and plans are being made!

I'm looking forward to getting away from this city that we've been in lockdown since November! 😫 I'm looking forward to slow days spent in them there hills with these three (without a doubt the best in the world, but hey, I'm totally biased there! πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ) I'm looking forward to days where we can challenge ourselves like we used to, to try to reach the summit and overcome whatever the days throw at us together as a family, out in nature we've missed so much! I'm looking forward to days where me and Keith can be our usual exhausted self (sleep deprivation/stubborn 2yo/ home educating 9yo - I'm looking at you!) but where we feel our absolute best in the outdoors! Because everything feels so much better outside doesn't it!?!

See you on the hills guys!!! πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³πŸ˜„

While our eldest was off kayaking with his club, K While our eldest was off kayaking with his club, Keith took our youngest out in the canoe... last time he did that, our youngest was about 12 months old or so... now he's nearly 3yo, with a wonderful sense of self and a strong stubborn streak!! I forgot how magical being out on the water is with kids though! He sat still for over 2hrs, blissfully happy watching the world go by, helping Keith paddle by using his in the water "to be the engine" and insisting they go down some "bumpy bits" on the nearby rapids.

They all had huge grins on their faces, it was a really great reintroduction to rivers for both of the kids! Magic πŸ’«

How was your weekend? Any fun adventures or exploring somewhere new? Also let us know what your best tips are for your kids staying safe on the water?

4 years ago today we were heading off to bag 4 mun 4 years ago today we were heading off to bag 4 munros in the Cairngorms with a summit wildcamp. I can't remember how far we walked/ascent etc πŸ™ˆ but I can remember the beauty of the place, the grin my son had when we got out a surprise cupcake for him to celebrate bagging his 20th munro, walking past huge herds of deer, seeing one of the most beautiful sunsets, my son running and laughing wildly with a headtorch once it had gotten dark, the feeling of just being in the moment, taking the day as it came, one step after another.

While we didn't bag the 4th munro the following morning, that was the day my son listened to his body, knew he didn't have it in him to make it to the top and back to the van even though we were within spitting distance of it. For a 5yr old that takes some doing eh? We couldn't have been more prouder of him, so we headed back to the van and played in the river, ending our weekend adventure on a very giggly high πŸ’«

He did a happy dance yesterday when I told him we can plan big mountain days next month! I can't blooming wait either!!! πŸŽ‰πŸ˜†πŸŽ‰πŸ•πŸŽ‰πŸžπŸŽ‰

A beautiful start to the day this morning with loads of colours, tree climbing, exploration and lots of little ponds full of frogspawn and noisy frogs! 🐸🐸🐸

Forever thankful for mornings like this. Dundee Forever thankful for mornings like this.

Dundee has been in a 5mile travel restriction past the city boundary, since November... 5 months and counting... places like this are within reach and totally worth the early wake up to start the day off the right way πŸ’«

Looking forward to when we can plan bigger days out, not just at the parks, but to the mountains. I'm thinking trips for days on end, with nothing but adventure on our mind, tent and sleeping bags in our bags and no one around for miles and miles........ anyone else?
